North Western Province
This province is a rich agricultural area, with some unusual destinations to offer the visitor. Sun City and The Lost City form a massive casino and resort complex, complete with two world famous golf courses, a lake for water-sports, and an artificial beach. The Palace of the Lost City offers 5-star accommodation with Afri-Gothic style architecture and superb service.
The Pilansburg National Park is not far from Sun City and is a great opportunity for fun- seekers to broaden their experience with an encounter with the “big 5” at close range - without the risk of contracting malaria.
Adjacent to the Botswana border lies Madikwe Game Reserve, the largest privately owned reserve in South Africa and the scene of a massive animal re-location project.
North-west Province is the site of one of the most important battles of the Anglo-Boer War – the siege of Mafikeng. It is also the region where one of the earliest hominoid skulls was found in 1924, near Taung, sparking the debate about man’s origins in Africa. This theory has gathered credibility after finds in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya and at Sterkfontein in Gauteng.
