The Eastern Cape is home to the Xhosa nation, and features 800 kilometers of pristine coastline, a rich cultural and historical tradition, and malaria-free game reserves where one can view members of the “big five” – elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard and buffalo.
The cities of Port Elizabeth and East London are renowned for their friendliness, relaxed atmosphere and warm-water beaches. The Eastern Cape is a haven for water-sports enthusiasts, with some of the best surfing in the world to be found at Jeffrey’s Bay.
In Winter, head inland to historical Grahamstown for the annual Arts Festival and then to Ben MacDhui near Hogsback for a bit of snow-skiing.
